Coal prices vary based on a number of different factors

It’s that time of year again. Children are being very well behaved, hoping that Santa will leave toys rather than lumps of coal under their Christmas trees. Coal can be used for a variety of things - aside from threatening children who are misbehaving around the holidays. Coal can be used to heat homes, and it can be used to create energy such as electricity. Coal prices vary based on a number of factors.

There are different types of coal, based on which layer it is extracted from. Some types of coal are better than others, and some are best used for specific purposes. Therefore, the type of coal that you plan to purchase is one factor that will affect the price. The abundance of coal will also have an effect on coal prices. Like petroleum and other natural fuel sources, the amount of coal available at a given time will determine the price. Of course, the amount you plan to purchase will also be a variable on price. If you plan to purchase a lot, you may get a better deal on the unit price than you would if you planned to buy a small amount. Coal is generally sold by the ton.

When I was younger, my dad worked in a strip mine. He operated various types of heavy equipment, such as a loader and a dozer. When the company scheduled a delivery between the strip mine and our home, my dad would often bring the dump truck and a load of coal home at night. He would eat dinner first, and then I would go with him to deliver the coal to a neighboring home. I never paid a lot of attention to coal prices. I was more concerned with riding in the truck and spending time with my dad. He talks about how the prices have risen over the years though. Just like a gallon of gasoline, a ton of coal is more expensive now that it used to be.
